English Proficiency Requirement

International applicants whose native language is not English are required to submit proof of English proficiency. Applicants must meet one of the two options below.

Students who graduated high school from one of the countries listed below, or can show proof of successful completion at an English-language institution, may qualify for an English proficiency exam waiver: Antigua & Barbuda, Australia, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Canada (except Quebec), Dominica, Fiji, The Gambia, Grenada, Guyana, Ireland, Jamaica, Liberia, New Zealand, Nigeria, St. Kitts & Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, Trinidad/Tobago, Turks and Caicos Islands, United Kingdom, various overseas U.S. and Pacific Trust territories, and most American/British/English Schools (by name), which serve non-citizen English-speakers and non-English speakers in a foreign country.

Undergraduate International Students

OLLU's English proficiency requirement can be satisfied by submitting the minimum test score of one of the following exams:

Option 1 - Submit an official TOEFL (school code 6550): 
TOEFL score of 525 for the paper-based test OR 71 for the Internet-based test (iBT). 
IELTS Academic score of 6.0.

Option 2 - Submit an official IELTS score:
IELTS Academic score of 6.0.

Option 3 - Submit an official DuoLingo score:
Duolingo academic score of 105.

Option 2 - Waiver Policy:

  • Freshmen must have at least three years of high school-level English at a US high school or the equivalent to a United States high school diploma in an English-speaking country.
  • Undergraduate Transfers must have 12 hours of undergraduate credit from an accredited U.S. college/university level credits with a minimum GPA of 2.0. This does not include ESL or Developmental non-credit classes.
  • Contact the OLLU Office of Undergraduate Admissions Counselor for a list of exempt English-speaking countries (or see list at top of this page).

Graduate International Students

The English proficiency can be satisfied by submitting a minimum test score of one of the following:

Submit official TOEFL (school code 6550) or IELTS score: 

TOEFL score of 550 for the paper-based test or 79 for the Internet Based Test (IBT)
IELTS Academic score of 6.5.
