Mass Communication students claim Texas press awards
Apr 24, 2020
OLLU mass communication major Santiago Reyes won first place for Visual Reporting in a statewide competition for his 2019 feature photo from the mass shooting in El Paso, Texas.
Judges from the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association also awarded Reyes, a junior from El Paso, honorable mention in Visual Reporting for his sports action photo of an OLLU soccer goal.
A photographer for The Lake Front, OLLU's student-run newspaper, Reyes competed against students from such schools as the University of Texas at Austin, Baylor University, Texas Christian University, Rice University, Texas State University, University of North Texas and St. Mary's University.
"Winning against such big schools is special for me," Reyes said. "It speaks to what Lake Front students are capable of. I think OLLU has an amazing program and it shows in my peers' work. I would love to thank my professors, who have taught me so much. But this one goes out to the city of El Paso. Together, we are strong. I love you 915."
Other winners included mass communication students Jeremy Faulkner, Danielle Ojeda and Catalina Sanchez who claimed honorable mention for Overall Excellence for their work on the www.lakefrontnews.com website.
"This is a testament for what our students have done throughout their collegiate career," said Alexis J. Arreguin, assistant professor, clinical mass communication and adviser for The Lake Front. "And it's an honor for our program and the university to be recognized statewide."
