MA in Communication Sciences and Disorders Program Overview

The Master of Arts degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) at Our Lady of the Lake University prepares students for service careers in speech-language pathology through comprehensive coursework with an emphasis on clinical training. Students gain practical experience at the university’s on-campus clinic and through practicum placements in other facilities including public schools, rehabilitation centers, community clinics and hospitals.. In addition, students can develop skills in bilingual (English/Spanish) assessment and intervention through an optional certificate.

 

 

Bilingual Speech-Language Pathology

The CSD program offers students the option to acquire the academic knowledge and clinical skills needed to provide bilingual (English/Spanish) assessment and intervention. A bilingual certificate is earned through the completion of additional coursework in bilingual topics and completion of a Spanish-language clinical practicum of at least 50 hours.

Accreditation

The MA program:

  • Is accredited in Speech-Language Pathology by the Council on Academic Accreditation of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA).
  • Satisfies all academic and practicum requirements for state licensure by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology.
  • Is a 50-credit hour program

What is an MA in Communication Sciences and Disorders

Courses in the MSOL Degree

Students in the Master of Science in Organizational Leadership program can choose from a full leadership concentration or an interdisciplinary concentration. The program requires only 10 courses. The following are core courses in the program:

LEAD 6310 | 3 CREDIT HOURS
Introduction to the history and theory of leadership to critical thinking and methods of inquiry as they bear on the subject of leadership, to the ethics of leadership, to basic leadership competencies, to relevant leadership contexts, and to leading groups and individuals. Analysis of historical concepts and contemporary theories of leadership. Emphasis on application of theoretical concepts to actual leadership situations.

LEAD 6322  |  3 CREDIT HOURS
Study of the principles of logic, critical thinking, problem definition and decision theory that are used in identifying problems, assumptions and alternatives for problems that leaders encounter. Methods of decision-making and scenario planning are explored in detail.

LEAD 6341 | 3 CREDIT HOURS
Explores the process of asking research questions and finding answers. Includes broad overview of experimental and non- experimental methods. Emphasizes the functional use and understanding of basic statistics in evaluating research findings.

LEAD 6321 | 3 CREDIT HOURS

Focus on strategic planning methodologies and issues related to the design of effective organizational structures, processes and control systems in contemporary and future complex organizations. Emphasis will be placed on a variety of seminal strategic planning methodologies available to leaders.

LEAD 6316 | 3 CREDIT HOURS
This course will offer students the opportunity to develop and refine conflict management skills needed to facilitate organizational processes aimed at successfully attaining desired performance results. Topics will include communication, interpersonal skills, bargaining and negotiation, and other strategies for recognizing and resolving conflict in complex organizations. 

LEAD 6310 | 3 CREDIT HOURS

Admission Requirements

  • Application for admission completed through the CSDCAS system
  • Optional official score report on the Graduate Record Examination (not required); test must be taken within the last five years; not required for applicants with master’s degrees from regionally accredited institutions; must be submitted through the CSDCAS system via code 7519
  • Official transcripts from all regionally accredited colleges and universities attended; transcripts must include baccalaureate and higher (if applicable) degrees earned and dates conferred; must be submitted through the CSDCAS system (Download special instructions for submitting transcripts from outside the United States and transcripts not in English ).
  • A bachelor’s degree in CDIS with a minimum cumulative grade point average 3.0 (on a 4-point scale) on undergraduate work attempted and at least 3.00 in undergraduate work in CDIS; for applicants with a master’s degree, a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.00 on graduate work.
  • Three references submitted through the CSDCAS system
  • Personal statement/essay submitted through the CSDCAS system
  • Resume submitted through the CSDCAS system
  • Selected applicants will be invited to a group interview with CDIS department faculty
