Curriculum Vitae

Areas of Expertise

I have been a state licensed and nationally certified speech-language pathologist for over 35 years which included working in medical settings and owning a private practice. Upon returning to school to obtain my research doctorate degree, my areas of expertise narrowed to augmentative and alternative communication and early intervention services for children with communication challenges between the ages of birth to 5 years. In addition to those areas of expertise, I have been both a director of clinical education and a school director in university settings. As a result, my areas of expertise also include graduate student clinical preparation, faculty/staff administration, professional issues, program development, normal language development, language disorders in children, articulation and phonological disorders, and motor speech disorders.

Teaching Philosophy

My teaching philosophy is based on the belief that learning is enhanced in a positive and supportive teaching environment. My teaching incorporates a multisensory approach with an emphasis on active learning methods and peer-shared interaction. Students are encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning and develop life-long learning skills. The goal is for students to enhance their observation and listening skills; critical thinking and use of problem-solving strategies; and hone professional writing and speaking abilities. At the undergraduate level, course content and activities prepare the student for future endeavors such as graduate school, obtaining A-SLP licensure, or employment in related areas. At the graduate level, course content, activities and clinical practicum experience under my supervision prepare the student for clinical practice with individuals across the lifespan who demonstrate a range of communication challenges.

Outside Interests

I enjoy nature, museums and keeping up with the news. A frequent vacation destination has been hiking in national parks. My favorite national park is Glacier National Park in Montana, followed closely by Zion and Bryce National Parks in Utah. When visiting new cities, I enjoy spending time at museums. The Smithsonian museums in Washington DC cannot be beat. Closer to home, the World War II Museum in New Orleans is amazing. Regarding art museums, the Art Institute of Chicago is a favorite. Lastly, I enjoy reading the newspaper, quaint as it may seem. I have learned much about San Antonio, where I moved in 2019, by reading the local newspaper and listening to the local news.
