The Center for Women in Church & Society was the vision of a small group of women who, over just a cup of coffee, dared to dream of programs, places, and people focusing on and fostering the influences, achievements, contributions, and continuing growth and development of women in church and society. The center’s visionary and virtuous founders recognized how hard women work to stabilize, protect, nurture, and educate future generations; how much women contribute to the arts, science, medicine, and the humanities; and how often women initiate as well as ignite change and innovation. They also understood that these contributions and achievements often go unrecognized, unappreciated, and unnoticed.
By sharing their vision with other women of leadership and foresight both on and off campus, the center’s founders quickly transformed their ideas to reality. Founded in 1982, the Center for Women in Church and Society seeks to expand the participation of women in all areas of church and civic life. The center offers programs designed to heighten awareness of both current and historical contributions made by women in church and society, serves as a resource center and forum for discussion and dialogue on womens’ contributions and needs, and promotes information-sharing, leader development, networking, and mentorship in academic, civic, and spiritual life.
The Center for Women in Church and Society at our Lady of the Lake University is a natural outgrowth of the historical commitment to the education of women demonstrated by the Sisters of the Congregation of Divine Providence and the university. The Sisters are both our foundation and our future. By drawing strength and encouragement from each other and the legacy of the past, women today can take the initiative and use their knowledge, skills, and abilities to make a difference in the future.
You are invited to be a part of the learning community that is the Center for Women in Church and Society. Faculty, staff and Sisters, alumni and current students, community and study groups will find a space where home, heart, and hospitality converge; where the university’s commitment to diversity of race, ethnicity, and gender is apparent; and where the spirit of activism, social justice, and equality guides continuing personal, professional, spiritual, civic, and educational development. Join us around the kitchen table or near the hearth for reading and retreat or dialogue and discussion on women’s social, political, economic, and spiritual issues. For more information, explore our website, contact us with your questions or ideas, or come by The Elliott House for just a cup of coffee.
