"Building Dreams"
On May 6, OLLU and the Sisters of the Congregation of the Divine Providence commemorated the one-year anniversary of the May 6, 2008, fire. 'Building Dreams' included festive dancing by Samba Vida and lively music by Grupo Geno. The RK Group provided delicious food, while Silver Eagle Distributors offered beverages for the more than 700 guests. Gypsy Pantoja, instructor of drama, served as mistress of ceremonies. The South San Antonio High School JROTC Color Guard presented the colors, and singing the National Anthem was Larissa Britton, communication and learning disorders major. The invocation was given by Msgr. Lawrence J. Stuebben, alumnus, Archdiocese of San Antonio.
After the welcome remarks by President Tessa Martinez Pollack, San Antonio Mayor Phil Hardberger talked and was followed by his wife, Linda, who is an alumna of OLLU. John Stankey, president and CEO of AT&T Operations, and Jim Shelley, senior vice president, Executive Operations for AT&T Services, presented the University with a $1 million check. Valero was also recognized for their $1 million contribution that was presented last year.
The Honorable Hope Andrade, Secretary of State, the State of Texas, presented a proclamation to the first responders, which was signed by Governor Rick Perry. Police Chief William McManus and Fire Chief Charles Hood, as well as representatives from the Edgewood ISD and St. Mary's University police departments, were recognized. In addition, the OLLU Police was honored, including former OLLU Police Chief A.J. Sandoval.
Sister Dianne Heinrich, CDP, Antoinette Winstead and Carlos Gonzalez provided voices from the fire to the future. Dr. Pollack concluded the event and was followed by a several bursts of colorful confetti.
