EDUCATION INITIATIVE WITH $1 MILLION GRANT
$1 Million AT&T Foundation Grant Supports Programs That Focus on Assisting
At-Risk and Underserved Students
SAN ANTONIO, May 6, 2009 – The AT&T Foundation, the philanthropic arm of AT&T*, today announced a $1 million grant to Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) to support the university’s Higher Education Initiatives.
One of those initiatives is the OLLU-developed AT&T Scholarship program. Thirteen students will receive a $10,000 scholarship each year for four years of their education. The AT&T Scholarship program at OLLU attracts and retains academically talented students entering their first year of undergraduate studies at OLLU. The program opens access to the university to underserved students who may not otherwise be able to afford tuition. The goal is to increase the number of high-quality students enrolling in their first year of undergraduate studies and help retain those students until graduation.
"AT&T has been a wonderful and reliable partner to the San Antonio community. With this $1 million gift, AT&T once again proves their commitment not just to this city, but to the next generations of San Antonians,” said state Sen. Leticia Van de Putte. “Our Lady of the Lake is doing great work and this grant will help them continue in their efforts."
The AT&T Foundation grant will also help fund the AT&T Post-Secondary Planning program. The program gives high school guidance counselors the tools they need to simplify the college entrance process for San Antonio high school students. The program will target at-risk high schools in the San Antonio area to develop and implement a comprehensive post-secondary planning curriculum for 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grade students. The result will be a positive effect on the post-secondary planning of students who typically fall through the cracks.
“The University has a shining history of reaching to schools where tomorrow’s college students are being incubated,” said OLLU President Tessa Martinez Pollack, PhD.. “Our graduate students and high school counselors will deliver a curriculum that gives high school students a vision, information, and confidence for a university experience that will transform the rest of their lives.”

The university has fed the educational infrastructure of San Antonio for 113 years.”
In addition to funding the educational initiatives designed to take the university to a higher level
of excellence, the Foundation grant will also support the capital campaign that has been launched and directed at defraying fire-related rebuilding costs at OLLU. One year ago on May 6, the university sustained a devastating fire to its Main Building.
“AT&T’s $1 million gift is a sign of its continuing loyalty to San Antonio, serving need where need is greatest so that young people can make that same transformative impact in the workforce,” said Pollack.
"It is essential that we improve higher learning opportunities for adults. We need a labor force that is ready to work in a highly competitive and increasingly digital world," said Van de Putte.
"These programs will help to ensure that more of our students get the diplomas they need to become successful."
