This Saturday, the free arts festival, Luminaria, will transform the public spaces of San Antonio into an artistic wonderland for one night only, and OLLU's influence will be seen and heard throughout the citywide celebration.

This is Luminaria's fourth year in San Antonio and artists April Atkinson, chair of the art department, and Greg Hinojosa, Thiry Auditorium manager and lecturer of drama, served as one of just four curator groups charged with the design and artistic vision of this year's Luminaria.

Atkinson (left) and Hinojosa (right) developed a zone (identified as the Green Zone) based on the theme of "Illuminating Our Past and Embracing Our Future," which will celebrate the carpa, or traveling tent show, that played a critical role in the migrant experience. The artists stated that: "Our corridor will bridge the traditional and organic carpas and contemporary uses of light in the context of artmaking in the 21st century."

Performers in Atkinson's and Hinojosa's Green Zone will include OLLU's own mariachi group,
OLLUtlan, and matachines dancers, Danza Azteca. The OLLUtlan Mariachi performs on Stage 1 at 7:35 p.m. and 10:20 p.m. Danza Azteca performs on Stage 1 at 8:30 p.m. and 10:40 p.m. See the online schedule for complete details.

Visual artists with OLLU connections who will display at Luminaria 2011, include:
  • Current Visual Arts students, including Elizabeth Rodriguez
  • Adjunct Faculty/Staff: James Cobb
  • OLLU Alumni:
  • Jesse Trevino
  • Gerardo Garcia
