First Year Connection Mentors
“Making a difference, one freshman at a time”

What we do:
First Year Connection (FYC) Mentors assist in the implementation and execution of the Lake Day and Lake Orientation programs by sharing enthusiasm and information about Our Lady of the Lake University to incoming students and parents. Then, they serve as mentors for the freshmen LIFE members and Peer Mentors in the Touchstone classes.

What is so great about being a Mentor?:
• Meet NEW people, develop NEW friendships.
• Develop connections with the OLLU campus community.
• Learn Leaderships Skills, Time Management, Communication Skills and more.
• Gain career experience and impress potential employers.
• Earn a sense of achievement and personal growth and success.
• Enjoying being a mentor and making a difference in a student’s life.

Mentor selection:
Mentors are selected at the beginning of the spring semester. Once leaders are selected they must attend a semester long set of training sessions and commit to a weeklong intense summer training to prepare for Lake Orientation. Mentors serve in their leadership role for the duration of one year from spring to fall semester.

Lake Orientation:
The new student orientation program known as Lake Orientation is an energetic two-day event that connects and transitions freshmen to the OLLU campus community. Students are engaged through a series of socialization activities and learning sessions that will prepare them for the first semester of college at OLLU.

Mentors in the fall, too:
Once orientation is over and classes begin, the role of a Mentor changes. The Leadership Institute for Freshmen Excellence (LIFE) is an incoming freshmen leadership co-curricular opportunity that is available in the fall semester. Freshmen meet new people, develop leadership skills, and enhance their college experience through fun filled sessions and activities.

FYC Mentors are the LIFE Mentors, who serve as role models, peer advisors, and assist the selected members of the LIFE program through their first semester at OLLU. These two leadership programs work together to ensure that freshmen are welcomed and transitioned properly through OLLU’s Lake Orientation program. Additionally the LIFE program enhances personal and professional skills.

Some Mentors choose to serve as Apps Peer Mentors as well as LIFE Mentors. The Peer Mentors are assigned to a freshman Apps course to work with the freshmen in the classroom. They help the students apply what they learn in Apps to their other courses.

First Year Connection Executive Leaders (FYCELs) assist the Orientation Committee and Advisors with the planning, organizing, and implementation of the Lake Day and Lake Orientation programs. FYCELs serve as liaisons between the Mentors and the orientation Committee. FYCELs facilitate team-building activities, plan evening events and logistics, and coordinate and facilitate all Mentor training sessions. FYCELs have served at least one year as a Mentor for experience purposes.
