Master of Arts in Teaching Program Overview
The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program at Our Lady of the Lake University is designed for aspiring teacher candidates who already have earned a bachelor’s degree and would like to add teacher certification while earning a master’s degree.

A Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) is a graduate degree program that focuses primarily on advancing a student’s knowledge and skills in education and teaching. The MAT is specifically tailored toward individuals wishing to transition to the teaching field. It prepares students for initial teacher certification while earning a master's degree. This program typically includes a combination of theoretical coursework in education, pedagogy, and curriculum development, as well as practical experiences such as student teaching or internships in schools.

Bilingual Education Certification

strategies to facilitate bilingualism and biliteracy, particularly useful in Dual
Language Classrooms.
Elementary with
ESL Certification
Here, you’ll explore modern second-language acquisition and ESL teaching methodologies.
The program prepares you to design, implement, and evaluate ESL programs, ensuring
you can effectively educate students for whom English is not the primary language.
Elementary with
Special Education Certification
This specialization focuses on assessing and addressing the individual needs of students
in special education. You’ll explore behavioral analysis, intervention techniques,
and the ethical and legal aspects of special education, preparing you for a leadership
role in this field.
Secondary or
All-Level Certification with ESL Certification
Tailored for those teaching grades 4-12, this path offers a deep dive into ESL education
across various subjects like Mathematics, Science, English Language Arts, and more.
It emphasizes developing skills to teach a linguistically diverse student body, enhancing
inclusivity in your teaching practice.

Courses in the MAT Degree
Students in the MAT program take 27 credit hours in the MAT core and an additional 12 hours in their specialization area. Core courses include:
EDUC 6304 | 3 CREDIT HOURS
Investigation of the similarities and differences between a variety of cultures (to
include topics of nationality, race, ethnicity, language, religion, sexual orientation,
socioeconomic status, stereotypes, abilities, family dynamics, etc.) and the effects
culture has on student learning, motivation, and achievement. Examination of personal
perspectives, biases, and views as well as discussion and recognition of mainstream,
political, ethical, legal, and economic issues and ideas regarding diversity and equity
in regards to students, parents, communities and the United States educational system.
EDUC 6305 | 3 CREDIT HOURS
A study of curriculum organization, instructional methods, teaching cycle, scope and
sequence of knowledge and skills in Texas Essential knowledge and skills (TEKS). Attention
to proficiency in teaching pedagogy with diverse students. Practical applications
of models of teaching. Sixteen clock hours of field experience in schools.
EDUC 6344 | 3 CREDIT HOURS
NOTE: This course not required for students in the Secondary/All Level Specialization with
ESL Certification program.
Review of and practice with research-based literacy assessments used to examine students’ strengths and instructional needs. Focus on administration of assessments, analysis of results, and planning and delivery of differentiated literacy instruction. 16 hours of field experience required.
EDUC 6348 | 3 CREDIT HOURS
An examination of the development of oral language and written language, including reading, and writing in early childhood through eighth grade. Foundational theory, research-based practice, and curricular components will be explored for all students, including those with diverse needs. 16 hours of field experience required.
EDUC 6349 | 3 CREDIT HOURS
Examination of different theoretical models of teaching and assessment with an emphasis
on the interrelationship between curriculum, instruction and assessment including
the design of high quality, developmentally appropriate, standards-aligned curriculum
for a diverse student population; technology integration and creation of performance
assessment, rubrics, test construction and modifications for students with learning
differences are covered. Practical application of alignment of instruction and assessment.
EDUC 6356 | 3 CREDIT HOURS
Methodological approaches for the teaching of diverse student populations in the content
areas (ELAR, social studies, mathematics, science, and fine arts). Emphasis on instructional
strategies and best practices with an emphasis on ELLs as well as, the use of technology,
working with students in small groups, instructional centers, and whole group settings.
EDUC 6365 | 3 CREDIT HOURS
Investigation of language development stages and acquisition processes in students’
first (L1) and second (L2) languages. Examination of the influences of language learning
for children with typical language development and those with delays and/or disabilities.
Emphasis on dual language programs, sociolinguistics and sociocultural contexts.
EDUC 6368 | 3 CREDIT HOURS
Overview of basic principles of classroom organization and management of instructions,
including theoretical knowledge about the science of classroom management. A broad
range of techniques is presented with attention to social, cultural, and gender differences
as factors important to effective classroom management, Code of ethics and standard
practices for Texas educators including professional and ethical practices and conduct
toward colleagues and students. Emphasis on practical application of theoretical frameworks
of classroom management. Sixteen clock hours of field experience in schools.
SPED 6305 | 3 CREDIT HOURS
Contemporary issues in diversity - including learning, cognitive and behavioral differences,
under and over representation of diverse students. Review of historical trends, definitional
issues, social and political frameworks, and legal and legislative history. Intersections
and complexities of race, ethnicity, language, culture, family, socioeconomic status
and disability. Critical conversations about ethical issues in programming, assessments,
and the current achievement gap among students.
EDUC 6375 | 3 CREDIT HOURS
NOTE: This course is required only for students in the Secondary/All Level Specialization
with ESL Certification program.
An examination of the development of oral language and written language, including reading, and writing at the middle school and high school levels. Practical applications of literacy strategies to help students become more effective readers and writers. Foundational theory, research-based practice, and curricular components will be explored for all students, including those with diverse needs will be explored.
Specializations
This specialization is for students seeking to work with elementary children from early childhood through grade 6 (EC-6). The additional certification in Bilingual Education requires proficiency in Spanish as the program builds on the candidate’s comprehensive Spanish language competencies.

This specialization is for students seeking to teach content in grades 4-8, 7-12, or Early Childhood-12; the additional certification in ESL prepares candidates to work with students whose primary language is not English.

Admission Requirements
Admissions to the Master of Arts will be determined by the Department of Education in the College of Professional Studies. The department will consider any materials that an applicant presents, but a completed application must include all listed below and will not be considered until a file is complete.
- Completed OLLU application for admissions myapp.ollusa.edu/apply (no application fee)
- Official and sealed transcripts from all regionally accredited institutions where a degree was conferred; student must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.75 (on a 4-point scale) on undergraduate work attempted for the baccalaureate degree and 3.0 for the last 60 semester hours
- Content hours: 12 credit hours in subject area/15 credit hours for Math or Science 7-12 certification

- Diagnostic Practice Exam - Contact Sharon Chapman at schapman@ollusa.edu, to schedule a date; there is no cost for this exam; strictly for diagnostic purposes
- Interview with faculty
- $10 fee for a criminal background check and $35 TEA technology fee will be required once admitted; if applicant feels there is something in their background that may hinder a field experience, clinical teaching or internship placement, it is recommended that a background check be completed prior to admission
