NON-TRADITIONAL CERTIFICATION PROGRAM

Master of Education for Non-Traditional Teacher Certification (MENTC)

MENTC is a 42-semester-hour program designed for degreed professionals who wish to transition to teaching. The uniqueness of this program is that it allows individuals to complete requirements for initial teacher certification while earning a Master of Education degree. Students who meet entry requirements complete 12 to 18 hours of graduate coursework during the first year of the program and take the necessary content TExES exam(s) in order to meet NCLB requirements for teaching during the second year of the program.

Six hours of the program are a professional internship where the student is supervised by university faculty. Students are allowed to complete their internship in a public, private, or charter school setting and become the teacher of record.

MENTC was started in 1996 and is well respected as an alternative teacher preparation program by area school districts. To date, almost 300 students have completed certification requirements in various disciplines and a master’s degree from OLLU.
