The Our Lady of the Lake University Saints faced Laredo Community College on Sept. 14, the second time in less than a month, in hopes of avenging their defeat on Sept. 2 when they lost 2-3. Unfortunately, the outcome was the same for the Saints this time around as they lost 2-3 once again.

The Saints started the first game strong with a quick 3-1 lead that included strong kills from sophomore Liza Rodriguez. The Palominos looked a bit disjointed early in the game allowing the Saints to take a 7-2 lead before calling a time out. After that, the score got to 14-10 after several bad serves by Saints players. The Palominos tied the score at 17 following two aces by LCC’s Beatriz Ferreira. Game one ended with the Saints losing 20-25.

Game two starters Rodriguez, Sarah Lindsay, Kelsey Johnson, Norma Fraga, Elyse Escobar and Jennifer Herrera hoped to start off strong, but were not successful after the Palominos took a quick 18-8 lead. The Saints never dominated and lost game two 15-25.

Game three began with starters Robyn Bush, Johnson, Desirea Aguilar, Autumn Carruthers, Fraga and Danielle Oterro coming in as libero. Rodriguez once again came through with several tough kills, but the Saints continued to trail early in the game. The competition was tied at 6, and Bush carried them over with the lead after two key points. Game three remained close with less than two points separating the two teams until an awesome serve by Fraga gave them a 16-13 lead. Johnson served an ace bringing the score to 22-16 and after several careless mistakes by the Palominos, the Saints won game three 25-16.

The Palominos took a quick 0-3 lead in game four and remained in the lead until an ace by Fraga that gave the Saints a 17-16 lead. Key hits and blocks by Bush, Lauren Eveler, Rodriguez and Aguilar helped the Saints win game four 25-19.

The two teams went into the fifth game tiebreaker, but the Palominos proved to be too dominating. Laredo led throughout the game, winning the tie-breaker 15-6 and securing the match win with 3-2.
