The new eco-friendly designed Sunanda Gandhi Memorial Home and School, modeled on Gandhian principles like simplicity and self-reliance, will afford 400 children better living conditions and up-to-date educational resources and will be structured to utilize the help of college volunteers from all over the world.
As can be seen in the "Ray of Hope" documentary at left, the children currently live and learn in their single-room school; sleeping on the floor at night and learning by day. Although they get by on bare necessities, they are loved and free to be children. They are happy but they do dream of a larger school that can help more children like themselves.

In January 2009, Worden School professors Cynthia Medina and Cora Le-Doux (seen at right in photo with Arun Gandhi and his son, Tushar) traveled to India with a group that included Arun Gandhi. On their trip, they visited several schools, including the Sunanda Memorial Home and School. The Gandhi Institute, under the direction of Arun Gandhi (fifth grandson of Mahatma Gandhi) is helping the school to expand. DOWNLOAD A PDF with more detailed information about this project.
At the Sunanda School, Professors Medina and Le-Doux met an Indian social worker, Anuradha Bhonsle, who inspired them with her courage and commitment. She has dedicated her life to rescuing children from exploitation. She can be seen in the "Ray of Hope" video above.
