Jorge M. Valadez, PhD

Associate Professor and Department Chair of Philosophy       

Biography:
I was born in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico and immigrated to the United States when I was five years old. I was a migrant farm worker as a young man.  My bachelor's degree in philosophy is from the University of Texas at Austin and my doctorate in philosophy is from Yale University.  I am currently writing a book titled “A Synoptic Theory of Justice.”

Areas of Expertise:
My expertise is in social and political philosophy, theories of justice, philosophical issues in multiculturalism and Aztec and Mayan Pre-Columbian philosophy

In what ways have students participated in your special projects or conference presentations?:
I have asked many of my undergraduate students to assist me in doing research for articles and presentations.

What has been your greatest success while teaching at Our Lady of the Lake University?:
I have received the Moody Professorship at OLLU and I have published a critically acclaimed book while teaching at the university.

What do students like best about your class?:
They like my thought-provoking lectures, my teaching them to think critically and my encouragement to challenge conventional wisdom.

What is the most rewarding aspect of teaching at Our Lady of the Lake University? Length of Service at OLLU?:
The most rewarding aspect is seeing students' academic strengths improve through their years here and teaching a predominantly Mexican-American student body.

What are some of your former students doing now?:
Some of my former students are getting medical degrees at Yale Medical School, doing graduate work at major research universities and working with Hispanic communities.
