MEd SCHOOL COUNSELING ONLINE
Our Lady of the Lake University offers a Master of Education (MEd) with a specialization in School Counseling through a new innovative online format. The program was designed for Texas educators who live in small towns or in remote areas of the state. The online format also accommodates those educators with a busy and demanding lifestyle. It meets the needs of Texas educators wishing to enter the school counseling field.
Offered through the Department of Education in the School of Professional Studies, the program provides the academic foundation for the Texas Professional School Counselor certification. Course work and practicum experiences are integrated to enhance personal and professional growth while in the program. Students completing the program will be recommended to sit for the certification examination. Graduates of this program meet the academic requirements for licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Texas.
A certification-only option is also available in this program. The student takes only the courses needed for certification and does not earn the master’s degree. Contact a Graduate Admissions counselor for additional information on this option.
The online school counseling program is offered in a cohort format. Each cohort is comprised of 15-20 students who stay together during the duration of the program. Cohort delivery offers unique benefits including:

At Our Lady of the Lake University, online classes are always taught by experienced faculty with a wide range of expertise, including current and former classroom teachers, principals, and district administrators, and state and nationally certified counselors, who blend theory and practical experiences to provide a rich environment for learning and growing.
The program is designed to reach underserved student populations residing outside of the traditional driving distance of students attending Our Lady of the Lake University. Therefore, students meeting all academic requirements and residing outside of a 100 miles radius from OLLU will be given first consideration.

Applicants for Professional School Counselor Certification in Texas are required to pass the appropriate TExES exam and document two years of teaching experience in an accredited K-12 school. All applicants for Texas certificates are screened for a record of felony or misdemeanor conviction as prescribed by state law.
Admission is granted to individuals displaying the promise of academic success in graduate study.
General admission requirements are as follows:
• Official transcripts from all regionally accredited institutions previously attended must be submitted in support of an admission application.
• A grade point average of 2.75 with a 3.00 on last 60 hours
• If cumulative GPA is below a 3.00, a satisfactory score on the Miller Analogies Test (MAT) or the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) taken within the last five years.
• Two letters of academic/professional recommendation not more than a year old (forms will be supplied by the University).
• Applicants who do not hold valid Texas Teacher Certificates must submit verification of local and state Criminal History Records. To obtain Texas certification as a school counselor, one must document two years of classroom experience as teacher of record in an accredited public/private school setting.
• Applicants for the online school counseling program without an undergraduate degree conferred from a traditional teacher education program must have a minimum of three years of classroom experience as the teacher of record in a regionally accredited institution, and may be required to submit samples of academic coursework completed.
• An interview is also required for admission to the MEd in School Counseling
