MASTER OF ARTS IN TEACHING

Our Lady of the Lake University offers a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) that includes preparation for initial teacher certification. The 36-39 credit hour degree program includes majors in Interdisciplinary Education, Math Education, Science Education or Special Education. In addition, students can earn a University Certificate in Bilingual Special Education.

The program is offered through the University’s School of Professional Studies and the Weekend College program. Most classes meet every other weekend, just eight times per term.

Teacher certification core (24 credit hrs.)

• Curriculum and Instruction in Multicultural Settings
• Reading Diagnosis and Prescription
• Classroom Organization and Management
• Pedagogy and Instructional Methods
• Instructional and Assessment Practices for Multicultural Settings
• Individual Diff erences-Advanced
• Student Teaching (3 credit hours) or Professional Internship (6 credit hours)

Choose one or more of the following
majors to complete the master’s degree:

Interdisciplinary Education 
Math Education
Science Education
Special Education
Bilingual Special Education*

Students seeking Early Childhood-6th Grade Certification can sit for the exam after completing the 24 credit-hour teacher certification core. These students complete the master’s degree by choosing courses from any of the majors. Students seeking Grades 4-8 or Grades 8-12 certification must complete the math or science majors. The Special Education major prepares students to sit for the All-Level Certification exam.

*This is a university Academic Certificate. Students can sit for the EC-6th certification exam with this major, but the state does not offer a Bilingual Special Education Certification Exam.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
• GPA of 3.0 or higher on last 60 hours
• If GPA is lower than 3.0, then applicant must submit a satisfactory score from the Miller Analogies Test taken within the last five years
• Two satisfactory academic and/or professional recommendations
• A résumé or curriculum vitae
• An interview with department faculty
• Completed application and $40 application fee
• Clean child abuse and criminal background check
