INTERVIEWING TIPS

Although the Student Employment Office identifies vacant positions and refers you for a position, it is your responsibility to make the initial contact with the department supervisor to set up an interview.  Below are some interviewing tips that may help you to be more successful in obtaining the position you desire.

  • Call the department supervisor to confirm your interview.  Make sure that you know the date, time, and place of the interview.
  • Attend the interview alone.  Don't bring family or friends.
  • Wear comfortable, but neat and clean clothing.
  • Arrive at least 15 minutes prior to your scheduled interview.
  • Be polite, enthusiastic and confident.
  • Do not sit down before you are asked to do so.  Sit upright and do not slouch.
  • Do not chew gum, smoke or fidget during the interview.
  • Concentrate on the questions that are being asked.  Answer questions as honestly as possible.  If you do not understand the question that is being asked, ask the interviewer to repeat the question to you again.
  • Do not criticize former employers.
  • Maintain regular eye contact with all people in the interview.
  • Let the interviewer know that you are interested in the position.

Questions you may be asked during the interview:
Tell me about yourself?  What hours are you available to work?  What courses did you take in high school that will help you in this position?  How familiar are you with current computer software?  What is your major?  How comfortable are you dealing with the public?  Are you familiar with any office equipment such as the fax machine, copier, computers? Do you have previous work experience or explain your previous work experience?  Why are you interested in this position?  What are your strengths?  What are your weaknesses?

If not previously discussed, you may want to ask some of the following questions:
Who will I report to? What is my work schedule? Will I be required to work when classes are not in session?  Are there any specific rules/policies for the department that I must follow?  What is the dress code?  What are my specific duties?  Am I required to attend orientation or any special workshops?
