The bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication prepares students to face the dynamic and evolving media world. While not forgetting the basic fundamentals of media law, ethics and history, the program also is focused on the future, introducing new technology and discussing emerging trends on a continual basis. Students get hands-on experience, whether in classes, practicum or internships, in writing, print editing, video editing, videography, Web publishing and more.

This mixture of old and new media provides students with a strong foundation to enter the media marketplace or graduate programs.

Students have their choice of three tracks:
  • Multimedia Journalism
  • Public Relations
  • Digital Film/TV Production

As students progress in the program, they benefit from one-on-one interaction with their instructors and are offered the opportunity to get practical experience by working with our award-winning student media, including the Lake Front newspaper, TV news studio (KLFN), and the online news site, www.lakefrontsa.com. Students who pursue the Digital Film/TV Production concentration also get a focus on directing and scriptwriting with courses also offered in film and television history, producing and production to provide a solid grounding in the theoretical, historical, business and technical aspects of the Film and Television industry. Additionally, our students compete in national and state competitions each year and complete internships at such sites as local print publications, Web sites, public relations’ departments, television stations and radio stations. Students also have the opportunity to produce, write, direct, and screen their films in the annual spring 24th Street Film Festival.

The Mass Communication program also sponsors Lambda Pi Eta, a Honor Society that recognizes and rewards outstanding scholastic achievement in communication studies.
