Through the Science and Mathematics Renovation, Retention and Research (SMR³) program, community college students who plan to major in chemistry, biology or mathematics at OLLU participate in an academic enrichment and undergraduate program and earn a stipend of up to $5,000. SMR³ is funded by the Department of Education under the Strengthening Educational Opportunities for Hispanic Serving Institutions Program.
What is SMR³?
SMR³ is a challenging and unique program designed to improve participants scientific, mathematical and research skills. In the summer enrichment program, participants experience an academic leveling program through course work and laboratory and computer sessions. During another summer, participants who successfully complete the summer enrichment will have the opportunity to perform an undergraduate research project with a University faculty mentor or an off-campus investigator.
Participants in the summer enrichment and undergraduate research will receive a stipend so they can apply themselves full-time to the program. All participants will continue to receive academic and career counseling throughout their college years at OLLU.
The goal of the program is to provide students with scientific and mathematical skills for graduate or professional skills or the technical job market.
