Bachelor of Arts in Art

Make your life a work of art

Few things are as satisfying as creating something with your hands and conscious mind. The Art department offers a new Bachelor of Arts degree in Visual and New Media Arts that provides a wide range of courses to cultivate students' creativity as well as the technological skills required of a new media arts focus. Students in the program are able to explore their passion, whether it is ceramics, printmaking, digital imaging, animation or even teaching.

The introduction of the new degree allows students to tailor their degree an create a visual arts focus, a new media arts focus, or a combination of both. Along with courses that are part of traditional Western art, students have the choice to survey alternative courses that are focused in other cultures to receive a well-rounded view of world art.

Students greatly benefit from the collateral requirements centered in artistic entrepreneurship, where they will engage in business and grant writing, budgeting, promotion, and e-strategies through their coursework to gain the skills needed to manage art and cultural organizations. Students will also curate and install exhibits in an on-campus gallery and complete internships with leading nonprofits to work with artists and art professionals.

An all-level art teacher certification is also available for students who wish to teach art in grades K-12. The program focuses on visual and new media arts, art history, and art education with a special focus on contemporary art and diverse cultures.

The Visual Arts minor is an 18-credit hour minor that will provide students with a basic foundation of art and art history with a concentration on the medium of their choice.

Art Student Organization

Art, Ink., the arts student organization, and the Visual Arts Program have developed a positive working relationship with some of San Antonio's most active arts organizations. These ties provide students with opportunities to exhibit art both on and off campus as well as the hands on experience of providing visual arts related services within the larger social milieu. The addition of a Mac-equipped fine art studio within the art department means that we now offer many exciting courses in new media and the digital arts.
