Bachelor's degrees in Spanish

The Spanish program at OLLU specializes in programs related to the Hispanic culture and attracts many bilingual students. Spanish serves as the foundation for the new concentration in Translation and Interpretation as well as the Biliterate Certificate Program, which prepares students to function professionally in both English and Spanish. These programs have been designed to respond to the needs of our nation's growing Hispanic/Latino population.

The Translation and Interpretation concentration prepares students who wish to seek work as translators and interpreters in a variety of fields including medical, legal, political, educational and many more. Graduate gain the in-depth knowledge of the Spanish language and culture that assists them in cultivating careers in the industry of their choice.

Students who graduate with bachelor's degrees in Spanish go on to earn master's and doctoral degrees in the language or work in business, government, international commerce, social service agencies, communication and a variety of companies and organizations that service our nations's Spanish-speaking clientele.

Summative Experience

All students majoring in Spanish are required to complete this capstone course that requires students to integrate skills and knowledge previously learned in advanced Spanish courses. Guided by a Spanish faculty member, students will complete an individualized project on an independent study basis. Projects may involve research, reading, a report or creative writing. In addition, the second component of the Summative Experience requires that the student take the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) and the Language Testing International's Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) and Written Proficiency Test (WPT).

Spanish Student Organizations

Students who major or minor in Spanish, as well as students pursuing a Biliterate Certificate, have the opportunity to join Sigma Delta Pi. It is the largest foreign-language society in existence and the only honor society devoted exclusively to students of Spanish in four-year colleges and universities. Students must meet certain academic requirements to join the society.

Students may also become members of La Sociedad Hispana Cultural. The organization aims to: "Promote and celebrate the Hispanic historical and intellectual heritage through the encouragement, support and validation of the members' academic achievements by their participation in educational programs designed to inform, enhance and strengthen the University's and surrounding community's knowledge of Hispanic culture." Membership is open to anyone who is willing to be an active participant in helping the club attain its goals an who meet the requirements of being a member of a campus organization as stated by the University.
